A drawing marked "Jos. 24."

This fine pen drawing in brown ink was tucked inside a lot of prints and engravings. It shows the renewal of the covenant at Shechem, with the biblical reference “Jos. 24.” added in the top corner.

The composition points strongly to the working method of Jan Luyken: loose, flowing pen work in brown ink, a biblical reference noted in the margin, and a design that mirrors an etching from the Historiae Celebriores Veteris Testamenti (Christoph Weigel, Nuremberg 1708). A comparable working sheet by Luyken for the same series — Der Tod von Antiochus IV Epiphanes — sold in June 2022 at Bassenge Auktionen, Berlin, for €938 including premium.

I put this forward as a careful attribution, not a certainty. It is exactly the kind of question where the final word belongs to specialists, and it will soon be auctioned at the Venduehuis in The Hague.
